Lesson #13: Take a stroll through your campus.
If your school life is anything like mine has been, chances are you've been confined to the same few buildings for all your classes. It's a shame to limit your campus knowledge to such a small section, walk about and check out the place you send huge checks to. I've yet to go into every building here at Syracuse, but have a plan: we will be taking what I have created as the "101 Tour." I've gathered troops, and we're going to go to every building on campus and take a picture in front of room number 101. Drinking may possibly--probably--be added to this game, in the college spirit. I'm forking over $40K+ a year to this damn place, so I better see every last building if it's the last thing I do!! |

Lesson #14: Attend a college performance.
One of the things that really amazes me about Syracuse is the diversity in study we have here on campus. While I'm doing my own thing, there are students getting their drama, singing, metal-smithing, and music on. At least once a semester, most fancy classes will have some kind of performance or presentation, and they are -so- worth going to! I've seen plays down at Syracuse Stage, art exhibits in Schaffer, heard recitals in Setnor, and attended jewelry sales. Not only is it interesting to see what your fellow students are doing, most of these events are super cheap or even free. Super great, especially on a student budget. |

Lesson #15: Talk to crazy people on the street.
Some of the craziest conversations I've had with people I've just met have been on some sidewalk with a person who's a few crusts short of a pie. They look funny, they smell weird, they talk crazy--and they're great. I was once at the Carousel Mall, waiting for the bus back to campus, when a frumpy, middle-aged woman sat next to me and asked me for the time. Before I knew it, she was opening her heart to me about a recent heartbrake and a cheating lover, and I was advising her based on my past histories. It was intense. And I loved every strange minute of it. I'm not sure what it is about me attracting strangers to speak with me, but you should try to follow suit. I guarantee a good time. |

Lesson #17: Visit a local museum.
Did you know that the Everson Museum here in Syracuse has the largest collection of American ceramics?? Neither did I, until I went there. If there's one thing that this town has, it's museums. I've had the opportunity to stroll through museums, galleries, exhibits, student shows, and more--every experience as wonderful as the next. Sure, many museums have the same stuff to the untrained eye (like my own), but it's the little specialities that you need to dig a little deeper for that make the trip all worthwhile. Plus, many of us are studying in a town away from home that we'll probably never visit again, at least for a very long time--so take advantage of your city! |
